Who are we?
Scenic Jacksonville is a coalition of residents concerned for the quality of life in the city of Jacksonville, Florida. Our constituents include homeowners and businesses who are concerned about our city's deteriorating scenic beauty. We work with concerned residents and citizens in reducing visual clutter in the city. The coalition's members have no political or pecuniary interest in this subject other than as it affects them and their fellow citizens.
Scenic Jacksonville, Inc. was formed to protect and promote the scenic beauty of Jacksonville, Florida by educating the public regarding visual pollution (such as litter, overhead wires, and sign proliferation, all of which and more can be addressed through beautification projects) and encouraging the adoption of meaningful policies for signs and outdoor advertising. Scenic Jacksonville, Inc., originally formed as Capsigns, Inc. in April 1987, received the Robert Rodale National Environmental Achievement Award for Beautification in 2001. The national award was presented in Washington, D.C. at a national environmental awards ceremony, and was accepted for the organization by its co-founder Bill Gassett. At the opening of the awards ceremony at a seated dinner in the historic Russell Senate Office Building Caucus Room, there was a video presentation of the grassroots effort that led to an amendment of the Jacksonville City Charter in the Spring of 1987 to prohibit new off-site commercial billboards.
Membership, subject to Board approval, simply requires a firm commitment to support Scenic America's Seven Principles for Scenic Conservation.
Scenic Jacksonville is an ally and supporter of Citizens for a Scenic Florida, Inc., a separate entity formed in 1998 to address statewide scenic issues and concerns.
